An icon of the modern era of Canadian Architecture, the Housing Union Building (HUB) on the University of Alberta Campus suffers from water leakage over a significant portion of its skylighted interior street. The University organised a competition challenge to take the idea of a new roof and convert it into a poetic architectural response – a pragmatic, yet elegant solution. Snowdrift, is a proposed floating roof plane that forms a simple sweep across the length of the complex, gradually rising to the east and south to capture the sun while sloping towards the north and west as protection from the setting sun and the wind.
