The redevelopment of the Van Vliet Centre for both varsity and intramural recreation activities is a departure from previous programming exercises associated with the University of Alberta. Issues of programmatic expansion, circulation, wayfinding and the upgrade of existing services are identified and addressed in a manner that resolves existing fundamental inefficiencies and creates a long-term vision. The concept establishes a new varsity precinct west of the existing facilities consisting of a new varsity arena and gymnasium, concourse and support facilities. The existing varsity gymnasium is converted into a campus fitness centre, integrated with a simplified circulation system that brings together all of the various components. Issues related to circulation, security and control are resolved along with future space needs.
